Last of a sreies of works based on the majestic Cistercian Abbey ruins of North Yorkshire. I was trying to avoid the stereotyped depiction of this much-painted subject (Turner preceded me by 200 years! )
I used a tryptich format in earlier versions to depict the'weaving'inside and outside the structure of the abbey ruins and developed it using the whole gamut of my techniques-scraping back with a mat blade-impasto work with marble dust and some crayon work in the figures and structure-to give a sense of'carving with light'.
